Well, I've finished building the dalek. It's difficult to gauge the size from the photo, but believe me, it's big! I tried it on my head this afternoon, and I definitely won't be winning any prizes for the fastest breaststroke. I'm just hoping I don't strain my neck trying to keep it upright.
I'm sure it will impress the spectators. It'll create some interesting photo opportunities and maybe generate a bit of PR for Rosemead and our Channel swim.
If you've been scraping ice off your car for the last couple of mornings, you'll know it's pretty cold outside at the moment. And today the water in the Lido was 3.9 degrees. Tooting Bec Lido will be even colder because it's a larger expanse of water and it's surrounded by trees. So wish us luck for the Saturday 'races'. I'll post some photos. And I'll see if I can get a photo of the dalek floating across the water.

Dalek
Dalek? I hear you say. Why has he posted a picture of a Dalek? I'll get to that in a moment.
There's only one week to go before we hit the UK Cold Water Swimming Championships. Our team is ready(ish). Both Lynne and Orlaith swam in the sea over the Christmas holidays, Debbie swam a magnificent 10 lengths in Brockwell Lido last Saturday, and I reached a personal best of 10 consecutive days swimming in the Lido (6 degrees this morning, and a walk across the ice to reach the water).
Why the Dalek? We have a team of 4 ready for the relay event (which kicks off at 12.15 if you're interested), but both Orlaith and I have entered the 'heads up' breaststroke event as well (which means swimming breaststroke with our heads out of the water - the old-fashioned way). I'm sure Orlaith will do really well, but I can't see myself making it through the first round, let alone the final.
So, I thought I'd have a go at getting the prize for the most flamboyent and outrageous swim hat. Yes, after discussion and debate with my daughter Kate, I'm going to wear a Dalek on my head. I've given myself 2 weeks to make it - 1 week to build it, and 1 week to paint it. I have 1 week left ... Thanks to a whole bunch of recycled materials found around the house (including a box of balsa wood bits, some ping-pong balls, a paint can, some old magazines, and some weed membrane) I think I'm doing rather well (although I do need to figure out how to fasten it on my head). I'll post another picture once it's painted.
If you're coming along to the event on the 24th, look out for a Dalek cruising along the water. The 'heads-up' breaststroke heats start at 10.50 ...

Famous(ish)
When someone approached me at the Lido this morning with a model-release form, I thought that Men's Health had finally spotted my stylish swim-stroke. But no, they were filming "a rubbish ad" (as the guy put it), and the back of my head had appeared in their shot. Quite how he expected me to write on the form, let alone hold the pen, when I was standing in the pouring rain after climbing out of water that was 6.2 degrees, I'll never know. So, even if the back of my head became famous, they wouldn't know where to send the royalties because my writing was illegible.
I've posted a photo today (not of the back of my head), because Mrs Kastoryano said her friends didn't believe that someone could be swimming in the Lido in January. Well, here's photographic proof that I was at the Lido today. I'm dripping in the photo because it was pouring with rain. If you want more proof, look out for the back of my head in a rubbish ad.

New Year Resolutions
According to the statisticbrain web site (yes there is such a thing), the top new year's resolution for 2014 was "lose weight". And, if you've been swimming in Brockwell Lido this week, you've probably guessed that the top resolution for 2015 is the same thing. I can't believe how busy the Lido is!
I was at the Lido yesterday, ready for the doors to open at 8.15am, and there was still someone in the changing room before me. And every lane of the pool was taken by the time I stomped down the steps into the water. These 'new' swimmers are not wimping out with a few lengths either. They're swimming when I get in, and they're still swimming when I get out.
It's good motivation for me though. It makes me think "right, I'm going to swim for longer than you!". Mind you, I looked at my post-swim self in the mirror yesterday and I was a scary shade of orange.
My wife Elaine and I gave up setting new year's resolutions years ago. We set objectives. It's much better having something that you can take all year to do, rather than failing in a few weeks to keep something going for a year. So, obviously, one of this year's objectives for me is to swim the Channel! I have a whole bunch of other really exciting objectives too ...

Two weeks
Gosh, I can't believe it's more than two weeks since I last posted to the blog. What with Christmas and all the stuff that happens leading up to it (I had five carol services to do the music for, and a Santa gig for 360 children), I just haven't had time to get to the PC.
I have been swimming though! Today was my first time back in the water since Christmas day. The Lido was closed on Boxing day, and you had to sign up for a slot to swim on Christmas day (and yes, I was too late to do that). So, 8.30 this morning and I was back in water that was 6.6 degrees. Lovely! First in. Okay, it was raining, and it was dull and cloudy, but there's nothing quite like slipping into a silky smooth pool and hearing the gentle plop of water as your hands enter on each stroke. Lovely!
So, I'll be back in the water tomorrow first thing. I need to burn off some of my excess turkey and Christmas pud.

Shock
I don't want to bore you with endless accounts of how cold the water is ... but, it was cold this morning.
Last week the water temperature dropped to 8.9 degrees. That was bit of a shock. It was though, nothing like the shock I received this morning. The temperature of the water was 6.8 degrees. Yes, 6.8 degrees! The changing room was full (okay, think December-full, not July-full), full of shivering, bright orange men.
The wall between the men's and ladies' changing rooms is paper thin. I don't know if the ladies know that, but we men can hear everything they're saying. (So, be warned if you intend to use the ladies changing room!) Giggles and gossip seeped through the wall from the ladies, whilst we men stood quietly and stoically, shivering.
I wonder if the ladies can hear us? Maybe I should start up a blokey conversation tomorrow and give the ladies something to think about. Mind you, if it's as cold tomorrow, I think I'll just be quietly shivering.

OAP
"Sorry sir, but I need to ask. Are you an old age pensioner?" This is what the receptionist at the Lido asked me this morning. Not a good start really. Before you ask, no I am not an old age pensioner. (I guess I must have looked like one this morning though.)
I could imagine looking like an OAP after a freezing swim, with wheezy breath, bright orange and pimply skin, and hair that's frozen into a style that's part punk and part perm. But, first thing in the morning I hope I look young and fit. Maybe that's my next target, getting the receptionist to ask me if I'm a student (not a mature student, but a young and virile student, a young and virile student who looks ready to swim for Britain). Or maybe I should just be content with sneaking anonymously into the changing rooms (which is difficult when you're one of only two swimmers going into the pool).
9.7 degrees this morning. Positively baking compared to last week. In the playground this afternoon, someone suggested monitoring my heart rate before, during, and after a swim. What a great idea. I just need to dig out that old heart rate monitor ... OAP? Just wait. A heart rate to die for. (Maybe not.)
